Since 2013 the government has provided additional funding to improve physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. It was announced in December 2015 that the Government would ring fence this funding through ‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation’.
The Primary PE and Sport Premium will continue for academic years 2023-24 and 2024-25 with a total of over £600 million of funding for schools provided by the Department for Education.
The School Sport Premium Funding is aimed at improving the provision of Physical Education, healthy active lifestyles and competitive school sport for primary school children. The funding must be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport, such as:
Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
Supporting and engaging the least active children
Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
Running sports competitions or increasing pupils participation in school games
Buying training materials or resources for PE and sport
Funding extended school sports clubs
